Surface sampling is used when a specific visible or suspect material needs to be characterized. It is a targeted tool, not a whole-building test.

What surface sampling is designed to answer
A tape lift, swab, or similar collection method may help identify what is present on a specific surface. That can be useful when the appearance alone does not answer the property owner’s question.
Visible growth still points back to moisture
Even when the sample identifies mold, the next question is why the material became damp enough to support growth. Plumbing leaks, roof issues, condensation, poor drainage, and humidity can all matter.
Surface sampling is different from air sampling
A surface sample tells you about the sampled material. Air sampling addresses airborne conditions during the sampling period. The two tools are not interchangeable.
Where surface sampling may fit after cleanup
In some remediation projects, targeted surface sampling may be considered as part of post-remediation verification when it supports the project criteria.
